Inductosense is a Bristol based company that designs and manufactures ultrasonic sensor technologies for corrosion and erosion monitoring. You will join our team of industry experts, including engineers and academics, who have successfully trialled and deployed the Inductosense WAND technology with major operators across the world.
Job Overview:
As a System Engineer, you will play a crucial role in defining, analysing, and overseeing the integration of complex systems across our products. You will work closely with internal teams (software, hardware, and firmware engineering) and external stakeholders to ensure a clear system architecture, solid requirements, and well-defined acceptance criteria. Your expertise will help bridge the gap between different engineering disciplines, ensuring that all aspects of product development align with the overall system design.
The ideal candidate has a background in at least one engineering discipline and understands how components interact to create a functional product. You should be hands-on when needed, ensuring system requirements align with project goals. Your role includes shaping requirements, defining test strategies, and guiding product roadmaps to deliver high-quality solutions. Additionally, project management experience is essential to drive system development activities and ensure smooth execution of cross-functional initiatives.
Responsibilities:
▪ System-Level Understanding & Requirements Engineering
Define and document system requirements, ensuring clarity and traceability from business needs to technical specifications. Collaborate with internal and external teams to develop clear, testable requirements for hardware and software. Identify system interfaces for seamless integration across disciplines, refining requirements to address real-world constraints.
▪ System Design & Technical Guidance
Ensure development teams align with system architecture and requirements. Facilitate collaboration across electronics, mechanical, and software teams. Support design decisions by balancing performance, cost, and feasibility. Work with vendors and external partners to validate designs.
▪ Validation & Acceptance Testing
Create system-level test cases and acceptance criteria to ensure design requirements are met. Collaborate with test engineers on test strategies for prototypes and production units. Identify failure modes early and drive risk mitigation.
Project Management & Execution
Lead system engineering activities across teams, keeping projects on schedule and meeting objectives. Manage timelines, milestones, and resources while mitigating development risks. Define scope, deliverables, and dependencies with stakeholders. Align technical teams, management, and customers. Support release planning and feature prioritization.
▪ Continuous Improvement & Process Development
Improve requirements management and validation processes for efficiency and quality. Foster a systems-thinking approach across teams. Stay updated on industry best practices in systems engineering and product development.
▪ Documentation & Process Improvement
Document development work and contribute to the improvement of processes and practices.
Skills:
▪ Technical & Engineering Expertise
Strong understanding of complex systems and hardware-software interaction. Experience in at least one engineering discipline: electronics, firmware, software, or related fields. Ability to analyse and define structured requirements from high-level concepts. Knowledge of system integration, design verification, and validation processes.
▪ Problem-Solving & Critical Thinking
Ability to break down complex problems into manageable components. Strong analytical skills to evaluate trade-offs and design decisions. Ability to challenge assumptions and refine requirements based on engineering constraints.
▪ Collaboration & Communication
Excellent ability to work across teams and disciplines, bridging the gap between engineering, product management, and external stakeholders. Ability to clearly document and communicate system requirements, interfaces, and test cases. Strong interpersonal skills to facilitate discussions, resolve conflicts, and align teams.
Expectations:
Work closely with other teams to define system architecture and requirements.
Ensure that system requirements are well-structured, testable, and aligned with business needs.
Provide technical leadership in system design decisions and risk mitigation strategies.
Develop clear test cases to validate system functionality and guide product acceptance.
Stay engaged throughout the entire product lifecycle, from concept to deployment.
Requirements
5+ years of experience in system engineering or a related engineering discipline.
Experience defining system-level requirements and working with cross-functional teams.
Background in systems thinking and multi-disciplinary product development.
Familiarity with requirements management tools is a plus.
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
Right to work in the UK and commute to Bristol.
